Debut You is an interview feature on Our Stories Matter blog. Debut authors, who have released or have upcoming releases in 2022, are given five questions to answer about themselves and their book. Currently, the questions are the same for all authors. We hope you enjoy getting to know Lala Watkins and can offer your support. Go here for past Debut You features.

Describe yourself in five words, then expound on one of them.
Joy maker, motivator, creative, good vibes connoisseur, and authentic.
I think that my authenticity of being myself fully in all that I do, from what I value, what I decide to pursue, and who I surround myself with—really shines through. It all adds to what is me, and so many can see that, and it motivates them to be true to themselves as well. Without my authenticity, how can I pursue the things that make my heart emote the heart-eyed emoji? My authenticity guides me to my joy, what will help me grow, and my creative passions.
Explain your book’s journey—how long did it take—from idea to publication?
Wow, so looking back, this book took close to two years to publish. It took 10 months from pitch to concept, to approval, and to submitting final art—all that happened from early 2021. Then, it took another 10 months in 2022 to wait for its book birthday (September) and be in people’s hands! I didn’t realize it would take that much time! I was working on other book projects and my own concepts that helped me pass the time. One thing you’ll get good at in this industry is patience and using the waiting period to enjoy.
Belief in oneself is important; besides you, who has been your cheerleader(s) throughout this process?
So many people have been my cheerleaders in this whole process besides myself. I’d have to say my agent, Erica Rand Silverman, who is a big supporter; my family—so many in my family are always my number one supporters—my friends; the Cartwheel/Scholastic team; and those who follow and support me every day with my art! Thank you all for the love, kindness, and support you’ve given me—forever thankful!
Understanding your audience is essential. What do you know for sure about the audience you are writing for?
I love writing for children and the kid at heart, and I know for sure they love to have fun and see themselves represented in stories, however that may be. Is it the plot, the values, or the characters? Maybe all three. Kids enjoy reading and learning, and if they see something they love reflected in that, it impacts them for the better. My goal is to add joy and play to the publishing world—to inspire and make it fun for those who love to read.
Tell us about your book.
Little Santa’s Workshop is the cutest board book that takes place at the North Pole! Santa’s workshop is lots of fun. HoHoHome to everyone! Feed the reindeer candy canes, eat some sugary sweets, build some toys, and most importantly, have hot chocolate! It also received its first starred review from the School Library Journal—which I’m so proud of.
YOU did it, congratulations! Your story is going to be read by children or teens, educators, parents, librarians, book bloggers, etc. How do you feel, and are there any other projects in the works—that you can discuss?
I’m so happy it’s out in the world! I feel so much gratitude and joy! Every day feels unreal, and I’m so proud!
