What’s Your Story?: T.L. Wynne: Daddy Daughter Series

What’s Your Story?” is a guest post feature on BCBA’s blog. Indie/Self-Published authors are invited to write about their books, writing journey, creative process, inspiration, rewards and challenges of publishing, etc. They can go in whatever direction they choose. We are excited and grateful for their willingness to share, and we hope you enjoy T.L. Wynne’s story. Go here for more WYS? posts.

As a parent, I realized early on the importance of representation in the television shows and movies that our children watch, the toys that they play with, and the books that they read. Representation in children’s literature is extremely important in the early stages of life because this is the time when children begin to establish their identity. So, it was only right that we read stories that had diverse characters my daughter could relate to during our nightly routine.

I also thought it was important for a father to be represented in a positive demeanor. I soon realized that there were few options that dealt with either, so I created the Daddy Daughter series. The Daddy Daughter series consists of three books: Daddy and Me, Daddy’s Day at the Park, and the newest release Daddy Daughter Day. Each book reflects different activities that we enjoy doing together.

I used the writing process as a creative outlook for myself and bonding time between us. At the young age of three, my daughter helped me choose which colors to use for the cover, what illustration should be included, and gave insight into different activities that I should write about. We both learned so much about each other throughout the process.

As a writer, I am committed to eradicating the negative misconceptions that society has placed on young African American fathers and their relationship with their children. I also believe that all children deserve to be represented in the literature that they read and seeing the excitement on a child’s face when they can relate to the curly hair brown girl they see in my stories makes it all worthwhile.
