What’s Your Story?: BK Fulton: Mr. Business

“What’s Your Story?” is a guest post feature on BCBA’s blog. Indie/Self-Published authors are invited to write about their books, writing journey, creative process, inspiration, rewards and challenges of publishing, etc. They can go in whatever direction they choose. We are excited and grateful for their willingness to share, and we hope you enjoy our guests’ stories. Go here for more WYS? posts.

The Mr. Business: The Adventures of Little BK book series is based on true events. My childhood was fascinating, to say the least. It’s funny how our childhood can serve as inspiration for our creative endeavors. I set out to turn some of my childhood mishaps into lessons children of all backgrounds can relate to and learn from. You can turn a negative into a positive and dream big and achieve bigger. I want everyone who reads the books to laugh, learn, share, and love.

I grew up in Hampton, Virginia with two loving parents, Flora and Bennie Fulton. My sister, who has Rett syndrome, inspired my first children’s book, Shauna. She is dear to me and has been a positive influence in my life. She motivates me to stay positive and work in excellence.

With Little BK, I wanted to set an example for little boys and little girls to see themselves and understand that every mishap is a moment they can learn from. Mr. Business: The Adventures of Little BK: Book 1: The First Day of School is about a situation I had with a kid named Grimes who picked on me on my first day. He said he would “get me” after school. He didn’t really have a good reason, but he had to pick on the new kid at school with the funny clothes. I dreaded the moment the bell rang. As soon as I got off the bus, he chased me all the way home. Thank God my best friend Rusty (my dog) was there to protect me. I look back at this moment and just laugh. Sometimes that “bully” who chased you around your neighborhood becomes a good friend in adulthood. That’s what happened to me and Grimes (That is his real name. I didn’t change it.). In adulthood, we move on. People change. Grimes is one of my best friends. Recently, the Soulidifly Productions team and I went down to Norfolk, Virginia (30 minutes from where I grew up) to speak at a Razor Sharp Readers event, sponsored by Clever Communities In Action (CCIA). I read my favorite Little BK adventures to the kids. And you know what I saw? They ran to the book table, enthusiastic about following along while I was reading out loud to them. They felt a connection with Little BK as a character. They saw themselves in him. They were attentive. They acknowledged the items on the front cover and how it foreshadowed the plot of the books they were about to plunge into. The youngest reader Chance, age 4, was vibrant and ecstatic about the books. He wanted all of them. One parent asked me for advice about writing and where to start. I simply told him to just start and you’ll get to the finish line.  I told him that professional writers are just amateurs that did not quit. As writers and authors, we have a duty to be a positive force in young people’s eyes. They are looking to us to lead by example. Because I know that readers become leaders, I’m going to try to tell every child in the world that “You are enough.”
