The Our Stories Matter Books-To-You Program (BTY) advances BCBA’s mission to promote awareness of children’s and young adult literature by Black authors. BTY’s goal is to gift books to children in our home city of Memphis, TN, and, as funds permit, regionally, nationally, and abroad.

BTY wants to foster the joy and importance of reading by providing books to children in Greater Memphis and other areas to enjoy at home. Access to books increases access to information and imagination, which can positively impact a child’s development and success. Additionally, books by Black authors allow Black children to see themselves—their cultures, experiences, images, and languages—reflected in the stories they read, expansive and varied stories created by Black authors from throughout the United States and the world. For children from non-Black cultures, exposure to literature written by Black authors fosters an understanding of people who have different cultural, religious, or social life experiences. Finally, sharing our stories can reveal that in some ways, as the phenomenal Maya Angelou says, “We are more alike…than we are unalike.”
