“Slavery is the next thing to hell.” – Harriet Tubman
In 1990, March 10 was declared Harriet Tubman Day. Tubman, born Araminta Ross in Dorchester County, Maryland, should be one of the most celebrated figures in United States history. Instead, some cities, counties, and states across America are trying to remove Black history from the classrooms. Black history is American history, and a woman like Tubman who lived a life full of pain, heartache, courage, consciousness, conviction, victory, and triumph, deserves to have the story of her life celebrated everywhere. The 15 books by Black authors range from picture to middle-grade titles. They are essential reading for young and older readers in homes, libraries, and classrooms.
