“It is important to celebrate Black Music Month because it’s a recognition and ownership of our culture. It’s something that we need to be proud of.”-Dyana Williams, Co-Founder of Black Music Month
Black Music Month was first observed in June of 1979 by President Jimmy Carter during a reception at the White House, but it took a few years of tireless lobbying by Dyana Williams before an official proclamation was issued in 2000 by President Bill Clinton. In this article, Williams expresses how it is important to know and understand how influential and inspirational Black music is around the world. She says it is “a source of pride and a source of great history as well.” The fiction and nonfiction books listed cover various genres of music history and themes, from spiritual to hip hop. For jazz selections check the book selection from April’s Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM).
