The “Black Panther” movie was an international box-office hit when it was released during Black History Month in 2018. Since then, there have been several novels released by Black authors based on the comics. In a YouTube video from The Root, the actors from the movie express their thoughts on “Why Black Superheroes Matter.” The responses align with what many Black creators believe, we as a people need to see ourselves reflected in all facets of life, even in fantastic superheroes worlds. Either way, real or imagined, when Black children see someone who looks like them on the covers and in the pages of books, it allows them the freedom to imagine and express their creativity. The books listed represent some of the middle-grade and young adult stories about the Marvel characters Black Panther, Shuri, and Miles Morales. Happy Black History Month. Our stories matter.
