Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th-October 15th. This resource guide states that “The term Afro-Latino was adopted as a response to the invisibility of Latin American and Caribbean Blacks while discussing issues of ethnicity.” In keeping with the purpose of the month, which is to recognize and celebrate the history, contributions, and varied cultures of the Hispanic community, the following list features picture, middle-grade, and young adult books by Afro-Latinx authors. Artist, Eric Velasquez, illustrated the award-winning, picture book Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library by Carol Boston Weatherford. The book tells the story of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, an Afro-Puerto Rican scholar and historian who collected Black art, literature, and other artifacts.
