About Black Children’s Books and Authors

Black Children’s Books and Authors (BCBA) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit. Our mission is to promote awareness of children’s and young adult literature by Black authors. Our online directory lists traditional and self-published authors. Whether you are a student, parent, educator, librarian, avid reader, or someone who just stumbled upon this site, this resource is for you to expand your knowledge of Black authors and the stories they write.

We HOPE…

that you will use and share this resource, but most importantly, support Black authors—buy their books, request that libraries stock them, read them in your homes and classrooms, donate them to schools, hospitals, community centers, and other organizations that champion literacy.

We BELIEVE…

that exposing children to diverse, inclusive literature fosters an understanding of others who have different cultural, religious, or social life experiences. As Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop states, “literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience.”

We KNOW…

that our stories matter.
