From the beginning of children’s lives, books are important. As children grow, a variety of literature should be introduced. Those with pictures and a simple narrative will be dominant. But soon there will come a need for a certain type of picture book, one that can be educational and fun—the concept book.

Concept books are for very young readers. These types of books are used to teach a specific concept, such as the alphabet, colors, days of the week, numbers, and more. They also try to teach these concepts in an exciting way that will capture the attention of the young reader, giving them a head start into learning the fundamentals of the world around them. While the following books do not feature Black characters, they were written by Black author, Bernette Ford, who has authored over 30 books geared mostly toward toddler and pre-school aged children.
